The tomb made from marble was built by the Indian Great Mogul Shah Jahan in 1651 for his favorite wife Mumtaz Mahal who died when she gave birth to her 14th child. Inconsolable because of her death, he had the palace built from sandstone and white marble, a masterpiece of Indo-Islamic architecture, which was made a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983.
