Fill a seed tray with moist seed compost. Scatter seeds thinly over the surface and lightly cover with a further thin layer of seed compost. Place in the warmth at 15-20°C (60-70°F) and keep soil moist.
Keep seedlings in a light position but shade from direct sunlight. When seedlings develop three to four leaves transplant to 9cm (3 ½ in) pots, allowing three or four seedlings per pot distributed evenly.
Accustom plants to outdoor conditions for two or three weeks before planting out from April on wards. Allow 30cm (12in) between each plant.
Cut stems after the first year to ground level each year in January or February.
