Sweet basil, chives and parsley are some of the best known and most used aromatic plants as they will add essential flavours to almost any dish. Herbs can be picked and used fresh, dried or even frozen. Sow seeds indoors all year round.
Place the compost pellets into a large jug or bowl and add approximately 600ml of tepid water. After about 3 minutes you will have enough compost for the 3 pots. The pellets contain all the nutrients required for healthy plants. Loosen the compost with a fork and then fill the pots.
Sow half the seeds by pushing them carefully under the surface of the compost and gently firm down. The remaining seeds can be used next time.
Place the pots on the saucer in a room or on a windowsill with indirect sunlight and warmth and ensure the compost remains moist, but not wet.
The seeds will usually begin to germinate after approx. 10 days, except the parsley which often needs a bit more time (2-3 weeks).
When the plants are approx. 4-5cm high, they can be thinned out by removing all but the 3 strongest plants (6-8 plants in the case of chives). This allows the herbs to have plenty of room to develop well. The seedlings which have been removed can be planted (spaced 20cm apart) directly into the garden, patio or window boxes from May onwards.
