Pastel is one of the art media that has been in use from time immemorial. However, to be precise, Leonardo da Vinci first mentioned it in 1495 but Johann Thiele, a German painter, was credited for the invention. The pigmentation of pastel is just like that of the oil paints except that pastel is dry and in powder forms making laymen confuse it with coloured “chalk” though completely different. Pastel also come in the form of sticks or crayon for better handling and applications. The range and shades of pastel can vary from vivid and brilliant colours to extremely light hues or shades, which makes people, especially in the fashion industry, use the word “pastel” for any colour that is pale and subtle.
